Making Pharmaceuticals

Synopsis

The only thing that was certain following the UK’s momentous decision in June 2016 to quit the EU, so called Brexit, was that the pharmaceutical, and all other industries, were facing many years of unprecedented uncertainty. This has certainly proved to be the case.

The only certainty is that the EMA is moving from London to Amsterdam and this alone has resulted in significant disruption to the normal working of the European systems for medicines.

At the time of writing it is still uncertain whether the UK and the EU will reach a ‘deal’ on the basis for their future relationship. Whether we have a deal or not will be clear by the time the UK formally leaves the EU on 20 March 2019. Even if a deal is agreed and we enter into an implementation/transition period, there will still need to have detailed trade negotiations for all sectors including pharmaceuticals.
My presentation will focus on the current and, as far as can be seen, the future impact of Brexit on the supply of medicinal products in both the EU and UK.
