Synopsis

Opioids are most commonly used in pain management for conditions such as cancer, back pain, and neuropathic pain. Opioid medications are prone to abuse (both intentionally and accidentally). Controlled release formulations are the primary target for intentional abuse, because the tablet can be manipulated to access a higher than pharmacologically required dose, leading to overdoses and even deaths. The consequences of substance abuse cost over $600 billion annually in the United States alone. The FDA is putting increasing pressure on manufacturers to develop “abuse-deterrent formulations” to reduce the risk of these drugs being misused. In England and Wales there are 1.1M frequent drug users (3% of adults aged 16 to 59) costing society £15B annually through increased crime, healthcare requirements and social care needs.

Lucideon has developed a novel inorganic abuse deterrent carrier platform. The drug or active ingredient is uniformly distributed within the matrix and is released via diffusion. The release rate spans from minutes to days and can be tailored to suit the application by modifying the process parameters. The platform has been used for API protection, triggered release and solubility improvement. It is a particularly suitable carrier for opioid drugs. Its abuse deterrent properties, such as strength, high melting point and low solubility, prevent accidental and intentional abuse methods including chewing, crushing, heating and extraction.
