Envirotainer: Releye® RAP

At Envirotainer, sustainability is a cornerstone of our company, and we hold ourselves to high sustainability standards throughout our value chain. We are proud to commit to and have approved the industry’s most ambitious Science-Based Targets (SBTs) across all categories. By aligning our CO2 reduction goals with science and the Paris Agreement’s aim to limit global warming to below 1.5°C, we’ve made significant strides in our decarbonization journey. Because we believe in leading by example, we are the only packaging solution provider with long-term and net-zero targets, committing to reach net-zero GHG emissions across the value chain by 2050 from a 2023 base year.
The Releye® RAP is a revolutionary solution designed specifically for the efficient and safe delivery of temperature-sensitive pharmaceuticals. Traditional transportation methods for these sensitive products often result high carbon dioxide emissions and excessive energy consumption. With the Releye® RAP, we have successfully addressed these challenges by developing an innovative solution that significantly reduces CO2 emissions while maintaining strict temperature control.
With Releye®, we have achieved up to 90% CO2e reduction compared to passive solutions.
Environmental Impact:
The environmental impact of transporting temperature sensitive pharmaceuticals by air is a critical concern due to the industry’s increasing demand and its associated carbon footprint. The Releye® RAP was specifically designed with sustainability in mind, with several key features that contribute to its low CO2 emissions and reduced environmental impact:
Lightweight Design: Every kg extra that needs to be transported results in an increased CO2 footprint. That is why the Releye® RAP utilizes lightweight materials without compromising structural integrity. This design choice reduces the overall weight of the solution (an overall tare weight of 1100 kg), resulting in lower fuel consumption and subsequently fewer CO2 emissions during transit. Based on our research (see table below), the solution has the lowest weight of its type on the market, resulting in the lowest CO2 footprint per m3 shipped pharmaceutical product.
Volume Efficiency: To further reduce the emissions caused by shipping temperature-controlled pharmaceuticals by air, we set ourselves the challenge of creating a solution with the largest inner volume on the market – allowing more product to be shipped in a single container. We achieved this by creating a solution with the highest load height in the industry through new advanced airflow technology, making it possible to utilize the full internal height of 132cm (52 in) inside the container.
As part of the consultation with industry leaders when we were designing the Releye® RAP, one key theme from airlines was that they were looking for a solution that uses the space in the aircraft hold more efficiently. The more efficient the use of space, less greenhouse gas emissions are created. With this in mind, we utilized the RAP size, meaning that the container uses one quarter of the space in an aircraft compared to a passive solution shipping the same amount of product (see below).
Being ULDs, Envirotainer’s containers can also be repositioned in an efficient way, using otherwise unused cargo space – so-called courtesy repositioning – in partnership with the airlines
Digital Services: We understand that the risk of product wastage can also add to a pharma shippers CO2 emissions. Our goal with the Releye® RAP was to not only improve reliability of a solution through the container itself, but also to increase the visibility of a shipment to not only give shippers the ability to track in real time the status of their cargo, but to also proactively intervene if the unexpected were to happen.
With this, Control Tower was born. The Releye® RAP utilizes 18 integrated sensors to measure:
· Cargo Space temperature (°C)
· Ambient temperature (°C)
· Ambient humidity (RH %)
· Cargo space humidity (RH %)
· Cargo loaded inside (yes/no)
· Door openings (open/closed)
· Battery level (%)
· Location
Through the data we receive from these sensors, our Control Tower team monitor the status of the cargo throughout the shipment and will proactively reach out to the customer if there is an issue.
Circular Economy and Green Production: Not only is our business based on a circular business model, where our solutions are leased and returned to us, meaning that they are able to be re-used hundreds of times, but we also reuse all parts where we are able to and the containers modular design means that repairing, refurbishing, and recycling is central to their design. At our production site where our solutions are built, we use 100% renewable energy which we are very proud of
