UKOps Leading in Product Donation from Excess Inventory

UK Operations has pioneered a creative and impactful approach to managing excess pharmaceutical inventory by converting surplus, fully compliant medicines into life‑changing donations for underserved patients. Introduced in 2024, this initiative reimagines a traditional manufacturing challenge—excess stock—through an imaginative, cross‑functional process that prevents waste and expands access to essential medicines. Working closely with Global Supply Chain, Quality, Logistics, Global Community Investment, and Finance, UKOps became the first site globally to operationalise a fully compliant donation pathway. The team adapted existing GMP, distribution and release processes into a streamlined workflow that enables rapid, safe, traceable donation. This demonstrates true innovation: not in creating new technologies, but in repurposing manufacturing and supply systems with flair and purpose.

By the end of 2025, our excess inventory donation programme had identified and donated medicines to 1,700+ underserved patients in six countries, including cancer medicines through our trusted NGO product donation partners. The process is now repeatable, enabling proactive prevention of waste whenever excess stock arises.

This initiative stands out because it merges manufacturing discipline with humanitarian imagination. Few competitors have integrated a compliant donation mechanism into their production and supply operations. UKOps has created a blueprint that strengthens sustainability, reduces environmental burden, and supports health equity.

The sustainability benefits are significant: eliminating destruction activities, lowering incineration emissions, reducing packaging and product waste, and supporting carbon reduction commitments. At the same time, the process enhances operational efficiency by providing a clear, standard route for future donations.

This initiative should win because it shows how manufacturing excellence can be applied creatively to deliver social value, environmental benefit and operational improvement—all while reflecting our values and setting a new benchmark for responsible, innovative pharmaceutical operations.
