Andrew King, Senior Director of SHE, Sustainability & QC Systems at AstraZeneca is nominated for the 2025 Making Pharmaceuticals Outstanding Contributor award. As Sponsor of AstraZeneca’s QC Sustainability and My Green Labs program, I [Scott Goodberlet – VP and Head of Quality Americas Region and Device Quality] work closely with Andrew to deliver these important efforts across global manufacturing and R&D laboratories. Andrew is an influential and innovative driver of Sustainability in our organization. He has not only delivered significant results for our company and the planet, but more importantly initiated a movement that is driving a sustainable culture in our organization. Some of his achievements include:
– The My Green Lab program at AstraZeneca has the highest number of issued certification, at the highest level, and the highest engagement of any other organisation
– Won awards at the international Freezer Challenge from 2022-2024 (and avoided 7900kWh/day)
– Avoided > 300 tonnes waste by reducing solvent consumption and implementing eco-friendly waste disposal methods
– The digital program he leads has saved 57 trees worth of paper

As an innovative thinker, Andrew continually challenges the status quo, implementing new digital tools and challenging a diverse organization to strive for excellence. For example, leading our carbon travel tracker for our organization allowing every employee who travels to understand their impact on carbon emissions, which allows for better choices and lessened impact globally.
Andrew has also shared some of his remarkable ideas externally to help others achieve their ambition in our collective effort to improve our planet. For example, Andrew is working closely with My Green Labs on the Converge initiative for suppliers to engage with this important program. He has also been appointed to the Grenova Sustainability Advisory board to help shape the future of sustainable practices in the lab industry.
